The University of Lahore, in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), unveiled a generous initiative on Thursday for Palestinian students.
The university, represented by Mr. Awais Raoof, Chairman of the Board of Governors, announced the provision of 5,000 complimentary scholarships, fellowships, and short training programs for Palestinian students. This announcement was made during a meeting at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah, attended by key figures including Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of COMSTECH, and OIC General Secretary Hissein Brahim Taha.
In a noteworthy development, Mr. Awais Raoof expressed the University of Lahore’s commitment to further initiatives. This includes the establishment of a 400-bed hospital and four institutions, namely the Institute of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Management Technology, and Faculty of Information Technology in the Republic of Chad. These endeavors fall under the umbrella of COMSTECH’s Program for African Least Developed Countries of OIC Member States, as highlighted in a press release by COMSTECH.
Furthermore, Mr. Raoof extended an offer of 5,000 free scholarships, fellowships, and short training programs for Palestinian students. This initiative is facilitated through the Association of Private Sector Universities of Pakistan (APSUP) as part of the COMSTECH Palestine Program.
Notably, Pakistan has recently declared scholarships for Palestinian students across the country’s higher education institutions, covering expenses such as tuition, hostel fees, and stipends. Presently, more than 300 Palestinian students are enrolled in universities throughout Pakistan, with a historical record of over 50,000 Palestinian nationals having graduated from educational institutions in the country over the years.
