As urban centers across Pakistan continue to face worsening air pollution and environmental degradation, the Punjab government is increasingly turning to innovative, technology-driven solutions to address these challenges. Among its latest initiatives is the expansion of the Liquid Tree project, a biotechnology-based approach designed to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions in areas where conventional tree plantations are not practical.
The initiative, managed by the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), uses microalgae-based biotechnology to absorb carbon dioxide and improve air quality in urban areas where conventional tree plantations are not feasible.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stated that Pakistan’s first EPA-certified liquid tree will be relocated from Faisalabad to Lahore under the expansion program.
She also revealed that more than 100 species of microalgae have been collected from regions stretching from Karachi to Khyber to support the project.
During the first phase, liquid trees will be installed in major shopping malls and various indoor and outdoor public spaces to help reduce urban pollution.
According to the chief minister, the project offers a practical and science-based solution to rising carbon dioxide levels and smog, contributing significantly to cleaner air and improved environmental conditions.
