Pakistan Navy takes a major step in its maritime modernization on Thursday by commissioning its first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, in China.

The induction of this advanced platform underscores the country’s focus on strengthening naval capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges and growing concerns over the protection of critical sea routes.

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that President Asif Ali Zardari attended as chief guest, alongside Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and senior officials from both Pakistan Navy and China’s PLA Navy.

In his address, the president described the induction as a historic step in the navy’s modernization, reaffirming Pakistan’s resolve to maintain a strong, balanced and credible defence.

He stressed that the country remains fully capable of safeguarding its sovereignty, maritime interests, and economic lifelines.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted emerging threats to global trade and energy security, particularly at critical maritime choke points, stressing the importance of advanced naval capabilities. He said that Hangor-class submarines, equipped with modern weapons, sensors, and air-independent propulsion systems, would help ensure regional stability.

He added that these submarines would strengthen deterrence and secure vital Sea Lines of Communication across the Arabian Sea and broader Indian Ocean region, continuing the legacy of the original PNS Hangor.
