Pakistan’s first genetic molecular laboratory has been inaugurated with the support of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA), a network of Pakistani-origin doctors based in the United States.

This cutting-edge facility, established in collaboration with APPNA, is located at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) in Karachi.

The laboratory will primarily focus on diagnosing physical and mental disabilities resulting from premature births, as well as identifying genetic defects in both children and adults. By utilizing modern techniques, the lab aims to enable early detection of genetic disorders.

Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of JSMU, said that the lab would also have the capability to determine a child’s genetic makeup and gender through fluid extracted from the mother.

The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures including APPNA President Dr. Asif Mohiuddin, General Secretary Dr. Rizwan Naeem, and Vice Chancellor of Dow University Prof. Dr. Saeed Qureshi.

Dr. Mohiuddin emphasized the lab’s role in identifying genetic disorders and other potential health issues in babies, as well as its predictive capabilities for future health concerns.
