In a proud moment for Pakistan, the documentary “Songs of the Sufi” has won the Best Documentary — Audience Choice Award at the 15th Chicago South Asian Film Festival.
The film delves into the deep-rooted tradition of classical qawwali through the lens of the Qawwal Bachay Gharana, alongside insights from music enthusiasts, devotees, and scholars. With a blend of Sufi-inspired art from renowned Pakistani artists, Mughal miniature paintings, qawwalis, interviews, and a verité storytelling style, it provides an immersive cinematic experience that honors this distinctive musical heritage.
“Songs of the Sufi” is a beautifully crafted film that delves into the history, culture, and the universal message of love. Sharukh Waheed and Kamran Anwar have brought this masterpiece to the big screen with great taste and reverence,” said Jigar Shah, Director of the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, according to a press release by SOTS.
Director Waheed expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s wonderful to see our film being appreciated both at home and internationally. This is our tribute to the art of qawwali and the qawwal families preserving this sacred tradition, and we are eager to share it with the world.”
