Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health Services has announced that the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) in Karachi, operating under the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap), has achieved World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification.

This milestone brings the country’s pharmaceutical testing system in line with international standards, confirming that CDL meets strict global benchmarks for ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of medicines.

Drap CEO Dr. Obaidullah Malik said the recognition reflects the WHO’s confidence in Pakistan’s testing framework and regulatory improvements.

He said that, in the past, drug samples were often sent abroad, including to Singapore, for verification. With this certification, Pakistan can now serve as a globally recognized testing facility, capable of evaluating medicines destined for international markets.

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal praised the achievement, calling it a historic step forward. He emphasized that the recognition strengthens public health safeguards while boosting the country’s pharmaceutical sector.

The development is also expected to enhance the global credibility of “Made in Pakistan” products, supporting economic growth and expanding opportunities for the industry worldwide.
